GOLCOWA ANCESTRY

HISTORY OF GOLCOWA

Golcowa i very old village, located in south east part of Poland. Now is in Podkarpackie Voivodeship. But from  1918-1939 Golcowa was in Lwowskie Voivodeship. Under Austrian partition Golcowa was part of Galicia.

Village is is bordered by Domaradz, Przysietnica, Barycz,Gwoźnica, Izdebki and Blizne.

MEDIEVAL

In 1446 year village was founded nearby Łączka river by polish bishop Piotr Chrząstowski. The first name of village was PIOTROWIN. Because of bishop's name - Piotr. But citizen change it from Piotrowin to Golcowa thank to first village mayor - Maciej Golec.

EARLY MODERN PERIOD

Under Kingdom of Poland, Golcowa was independient commune. With its own government in the form of the mayor, in practice, dependent largely on the overlord or actual landowner.
In  1624 Tatars first time attacted Golcowa, and they took into captivity 77 citizens. And another Tatars raid happend in 1696, they killed local priest - Maciej Misiewicz.
​From 1772 Poland was attacted by Austria, Germany and Russia. Golcowa became part of Austrian partition.

EMIGRATION TO USA

From end of XIX century citizens start to emigrate to USA and Canada. All of USA emigrants start they American yourney at Ellis Island. From 1879 till 1923 year, to USA emigrated from Golcowa more then 350 citizens. Most of them settled in Ohio, Michigan, Pensylvania and West Virginia. 

Most common citizens last names from Golcowa found at Ellis Island was Adam, Bober, Dobosz, Hadam, Herbut, Janusz, Klepek, Klimek, Kopczyk, Kozimor, Kudła, Mikoś, Obłój, Pełdiak, Piwowar, Płoucha, Skotnicki, Ślęczka, Śmigiel, Świder, Tomoń, Wiencek, Wójcik, Wojnar and Wolanin.

But we must be aware that this emigrants left familes in Poland. So most of descendants of emigrants from Golcowa, have in Poland relatives. If You are one of them, You are in good place to start research!
